Meeker Internet Trends 2019: Mobile usage passes TV watching in US for the first time

Mobile usage has overtaken television watching for the first time in the US and over 50% of the world's population now has Internet access.

Both of these communication milestones are courtesy of Mary Meeker's Internet Trends 2019 report that was released today.

Several of these identified trends are creating openings for startups to disrupt multiple industries because 'what we watch', 'how we listen' and 'how we ask' have all changed in the last 12 months.

What we watch

In just 10 years, US mobile usage per day has increased 11x from 20 minutes per day in 2009 to 226 minutes per day in 2019. This is 10 minutes more per day than television watching and it's the first-time this has occurred.

Meeker: Mobile usage surpasses television watching 2018

How we listen

So should entrepreneurs, advertisers and others ditch traditional media and spend all of their time, money and efforts on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter? Not necessarily. Take a look at 'voice-based' applications specifically podcasts.

In 2008, there were 22 million monthly podcast listeners. In 2018, there were over 70 million monthly listeners for a 218% increase in a decade.

Meeker: 70 million monthly podcast listeners

How we ask

Technological innovation is not only changing our media consumption habits but also our sources for immediate information and other skills.

According to Meeker's Internet Trends 2019, smart speakers grew exponentially over the last three years. Amazon Echo dominates the space with 70% market share or 47 million of the 66 million total installed user base and a skill-set approaching 100,000.

Meeker: Smart speakers exponential growth

So over the last year, we looked at our phones more than our televisions, we listened to podcasts twice as often as we did four years ago and 66 million of us asked electronic plastic cylinders for guidance.
